Characteristics and nutritional values
Brewer’s spent grain is in the form of a moist mass with a dark brown color and an intense, sweetish smell. It can also be found in dried form. It is rich in:
- protein (about 20-25%)
- fiber (about 15-20%)
- easily digestible carbohydrates
- Macro- and micronutrients (including phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium)
Benefits of using brewer’s spent grain (BSG) in cattle feeding
The high dietary fiber content of brewer’s spent grain aids digestion and improves rumen function. The high amount of valuable protein improves milk production and cattle growth. The naturally sweet aroma of the malt makes cattle eager to consume it. Thresh is an economical alternative to other high-protein feeds.
Method of application
brewer’s spent grain can be used both in fresh and dried form, mixing it with other roughage (e.g. silage, hay) and concentrates. The recommended amount in the ration depends on the age, body weight and productivity of the cattle.
