Characteristics of 2,3,5-Trimethylhydroquinone (TMHQ)
TMHQ is a white or yellowish powder that is well soluble in organic solvents such as ethanol, acetone or oils, but has limited solubility in water. Its chemical properties allow it to be used as an effective antioxidant, which prevents oxidation and prolongs the shelf life of products in which it is used.
Properties and applications
Chemical industry:
TMHQ is used as a chemical intermediate in the synthesis of many important compounds, including synthetic vitamins such as vitamin E and K. Its ability to stabilize molecules by inhibiting oxidation processes makes it a valuable ingredient in pharmaceutical production.
Cosmetics:
In cosmetics, TMHQ is used as an antioxidant in formulas containing fats and oils. It helps keep products fresh and effective, especially in creams, lotions and hair care products.
Food products – as a food additive (E319):
TMHQ is added to oils, fats and finished products to prevent rancidity and extend their shelf life. Its use is regulated by relevant food safety standards.
Safety and regulation
As a food additive, TMHQ is subject to regulations on maximum allowable concentrations in food products to ensure safety for consumers. In the cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries, TMHQ is also evaluated for safety of use and potential allergic reactions or irritation.
