Ceramide NP belongs to ceramides whose structure corresponds to lipids found in the stratum corneum. In cosmetics, it functions as a skin and hair conditioning agent. It is used in formulations designed to support the epidermal barrier, maintain hydration, and reduce the feeling of dryness and roughness of the skin.
The ingredient works well in cosmetics for dry, sensitive, mature skin and skin exposed to frequent washing, dry air, or adverse weather conditions. It can be used as a single ceramide or as a component of complexes containing several types of ceramides, cholesterol, and fatty acids.
Ceramide NP is also used in hair products. It allows enriching conditioners, masks, and leave-in products with a lipid component that supports the conditioning properties of the formulation.
Ceramide NP differs from Ceramide NG by the presence of phytosphingosine, while unlike Ceramide AP it contains a non-hydroxylated fatty acid. This characteristic structure makes it a distinct type of ceramide and can be used both independently and as one of the basic components of lipid complexes containing several types of ceramides.
