St. John’s wort is a very popular plant in Poland with a wide range of uses. It is used in folk medicine, and extracts of it are often found in the composition of
pharmaceutical products
. St. John’s wort contains: rutin and quercetin, tannins, hypericin and flavonoids, hyperoside, as well as phenolic acids, essential oils, vitamins A and C, carotenoids, pectin and choline.
St. John’s wort – effects
St. John’s wort acts as a diuretic, smooth muscle relaxant, and helps with abdominal pain. It can be used to soothe skin irritation and reduce acne. For this it is also used in relieving anxiety, depression and neurosis.
