The main components of pine oil are α-pinene, β-pinene, limonene and borneol. These give the oil its antiseptic, expectorant and anti-inflammatory properties. For this reason, the oil is popularly used in inhalations, especially during upper respiratory tract infections, sinus problems and coughs. In turn, when applied to the skin, it regulates sebum secretion and has an antibacterial effect.
Pine oil is often used in company with other essential oils, such as eucalyptus oil, lavender oil and lemon oil.
Due to its strong effects, pine oil should be used in proper dilution. It can be added to diffusers, massage oils, baths and cosmetics with refreshing and cleansing effects.
