MCT Oil Characteristics
MCT oil is a clear, colorless liquid with low viscosity, odorless and tasteless. It is intended for use in food, supplement, and cosmetic formulations. It is a technologically predictable raw material due to its high purity and oxidative stability (low peroxide value <0.1 meq O₂/kg).
Properties and Effects of MCT Oil
MCT oil is distinguished by its specific metabolic profile resulting from the presence of medium-chain fatty acids. Unlike long-chain fats, MCTs are rapidly absorbed and metabolized, making them a readily available energy source.
The caprylic acid content of approximately 63% and capric acid of approximately 35% influences the product’s functionality in nutraceutical applications. These fats are often used in functional diets, including the ketogenic diet, where they serve as a rapidly available energy substrate.
MCT oil is also valued for its stability – low level of free fatty acids (acid value approx. 0.01 mg KOH/g) and very low water content (approx. 0.02%) contribute to its durability and resistance to oxidation.
In cosmetics, MCT oil functions as a light emollient and carrier for active ingredients. Due to its low viscosity, it spreads well, absorbs quickly, and does not leave a greasy layer on the skin. It is often used as an alternative to heavier vegetable oils.
