Emollients – Wholesale
Emollients are substances with moisturizing, softening, and protective properties, used in cosmetics and pharmaceuticals for skin and hair care. The term “emollient” derives from the Latin word emolliere, meaning “to soften”. They are particularly used in the care of dry, sensitive, or atopic skin, as they help restore the skin’s hydrolipid barrier.
Functions and Effects of Emollients
Emollients create a protective layer by forming an occlusive coating on the skin’s surface, preventing water loss (TEWL – transepidermal water loss) and shielding against external factors. Additionally, emollients soften the skin and enhance the natural lipid barrier.
Emollients work through several primary mechanisms – via occlusion, creating a protective film on the skin’s surface to prevent water evaporation (e.g., petroleum jelly, mineral oils); by replenishing lipids (e.g., shea butter, plant oils); and by softening and smoothing rough skin areas. Furthermore, many modern emollients include ingredients with anti-inflammatory (e.g., omega-3 acids) and regenerative (e.g., ceramides) properties, making them effective for problematic skin care.
