Ergothioneine enters cells and mitochondria via the OCTN-1 transporter in keratinocytes and fibroblasts, directly neutralizing reactive oxygen species (ROS). Through this, ergothioneine not only protects against oxidative stress, but also protects mitochondria and mitochondrial DNA from damage caused by excess free radicals.
Thanks to its properties, ergothioneine is effective in protecting the skin from the harmful effects of UV rays, minimizing the formation of reactive oxygen species, which translates into a reduction in radiation damage to the skin. This is especially important in the context of protection against skin aging and DNA damage. Ergothioneine also shows the ability to reduce inflammatory processes and protect water proteins from oxidative damage.
In in vitro studies, ergothioneine has shown high efficacy as an antioxidant, as confirmed by physicochemical tests for its ability to neutralize DPPH free radicals. In experiments on zebrafish, its pronounced antioxidant effects were found.
Ergothioneine is used in a wide range of cosmetic products, including eye serums, creams, gels, providing whitening, dark circles reduction, anti-aging and moisturizing effects. It is a versatile compound that addresses the diverse needs of the skin, protecting it from external and internal factors that cause aging and damage.
