Antioxidants
Antioxidants are a group of chemical compounds that play a key role in protecting cells from the harmful effects of free radicals. Free radicals are reactive molecules formed as a result of normal metabolic processes and under the influence of external factors such as UV radiation, environmental pollution, or tobacco smoke. An excess of free radicals can lead to cell damage, which is associated with aging processes and the development of various diseases, including cancers, cardiovascular diseases, and neurodegenerative diseases.

Antioxidants work by neutralizing free radicals, interrupting the chain reactions in which these molecules participate, and by regenerating other antioxidants. The most important natural antioxidants include vitamins, polyphenols, flavonoids, carotenoids, and other plant compounds. Each of these substances acts in different ways and in different parts of the cell, allowing for comprehensive protection against oxidative stress.

Antioxidants are widely studied in the context of their potential health benefits. Regular consumption of products rich in these compounds is crucial for maintaining health and protecting against chronic diseases. However, excessive supplementation of antioxidants can have the opposite effect, which is why a varied diet rich in natural sources of these substances is recommended.
